In order to provide its own twists, Jurassic World: Rebirth revisits the formula of the first movie. The newer improvements, specifically the “D-Rex,” are at best mediocre. There is plenty of fantastic classic dinosaur action—hearing the T-Rex roar never gets old. Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and Scarlet Johansson manage to add nuance to their parts in spite of the script’s lack of depth. Compared to John Williams’ awe-inspiring score, Alexandre Desplat’s feels more horror-like. However, it works and lends Rebirth a more monster movie feel. Rebirth would have been fantastic if Edwards and his team had continued with that emotion, but he occasionally backs off to be safe and stick to the tried-and-true Dino formula.
